A medical practice turnaround

The Jones & Roth Healthcare Team was contacted by a Willamette Valley medical practice because the business operations of the practice were a mess. Our firm conducted a thorough assessment of the practice and its staff.

Our assessment found serious billing, collection, and cash flow problems. The accounts payable function was also in trouble. The income allocation among the doctor-owners was not fair or appropriate. The doctor-owners of the practice were receiving far less personal income than they should considering the size of the practice. It was also clear there was stress and in-fighting among the doctors which in turn created a very unhappy staff.

As a result of our findings, our healthcare team was asked to step in and clean up the practice. We established or changed numerous policies and procedures, including a complete review of their collection procedures. We helped the staff identify why insurance claims were being denied which allowed the staff to reduce the number of denied claims. A new incentive bonus program was established for the staff and we created a new income allocation formula for the doctors.

We worked with the firm's attorney and other service providers to improve the business operations of the practice. With the cooperation of the practice staff, we were able to increase cash flow, improve the efficiency of the overall business operation, and increase the personal income of the doctors by some 74%. Just as important, the doctors and the entire staff developed a more positive attitude about the practice and their working relationships.
